To Fear or Not to Fear

My heart was beating so hard I thought it was going to come out of my chest. I took a deep, shaky breath and forced the words of the song to come out. As much as I was falling apart on the inside, I had to keep it together on the outside, for the sake of the kids that were watching me.

This moment took place at a practice for the children's program. I definitely could not foresee getting through an entire play alive, while two hundred plus people were looking at me. I fought against these feelings at each practice and then some at home. It was pathetic! How could I have a passion to be involved with these types of events, and then literally feel like I was dying when the opportunity came? It was unacceptable and I had to learn to let go and allow God to do His thing. My journey to get there went something like this

A verse that I had discovered in the midst of fear once before, came back to me. It's found in Isaiah 41:10. God simply says to fear not, because He will strengthen us, help us, and hold us up with His right hand. Then in verse thirteen He actually says He will hold our right hand. So I asked myself, "Do you believe that?" Of course I believed it, but at the time I was just thinking at least I wouldn't be alone while I was keeling over! Needless to say my understanding wasn't quite full.

What Will You Get?

What will you get if you place a man on a deserted island with just aBIBLE and an OPEN HEART?

Now, obviously, he will need a few other things but let's just assumethat all he has to do after his basic needs have been met is read theBIBLE.

SO...when this man comes off the island, what will you have?

ANSWER? He will be a CHRISTIAN!!

He won't be an Apostolic or a Baptist or Catholic, Jehovah Witness,Lutheran, Mormon, or even Jewish. NO!

He will be a Christian. WHY???...because he had the BIBLE...and an Open Heart.

Our enemy has been highly successful in first appealing to ourprideful ability to 'build a doctrine' and then give it a name. Thenhe has set each of us against each other and left us to our squabbles. He has the advantage of knowing that we have a sin nature and eventhough he won't see most of us in hell, he will be satisfied that wewill be ineffective in influencing others for Christ.

The church has the potential to be an army of believers all across theworld and we are so caught up in our denominations and doctrines thatwe fail to show the world, one, the need of each person for a Saviorand, two, the name of the one God sent to accomplish that....Jesus.Sadly, it is clear that the world looks at the church and wantsnothing to do with us.

Home Religion

Please don't cast off this article due to the title. Oftentimes we hear the word religious and turn aside saying that I'm not into being religious but having relationship. In James chapter one verse 26 we see the mention of a religious man which the Greek defines as one who fears and worships God. If being religious is defined as one who fears and worships God; that is definitely what I would want to be known as exhibiting. Having cleared any confusion let's take a look at Joshua's religion

Jos 24:14 Now therefore fear the LORD, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the LORD.

Jos 24:15 And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that [were] on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.

Joshua declared that he had set the course and was going to stay the course not looking back, letting up, slowing down or backing away from the commitment he was making to his God.

Why was Joshua willing to make such a proclamation? What caused him to have such unwavering confidence to boldly say that no matter what you and yours do "as for me and my house we will serve the Lord"

Who are you looking at?

"Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth." (Colossians 3:2). If we truly lived with our eyes set on Him, things would be different in the body of Christ. The fact is, what truly matters in this life all ties to eternity. We tend to get too caught up with little things and then we live as though we don't remember whom we're supposed to be representing. We forget that we are pilgrims, and when we take our eyes off of God we trip. This not only hurts us, but probably more important, the ones on the outside who are looking in.

One of the places I've noticed my eyes roaming is in the church. I have fallen into comparing myself to other believers. We should all know the Bible clearly warns against this (2 Corinthians 10:12). When we look at those who seem to be stronger in faith, it can quickly discourage us and cause us to walk in defeat. We may see people who have it all together or those with a spark that never leaves their eyes. They could be living with the true peace of god, or they could be really good at faking it. Either way it can cause us to fall by thinking we don't measure up.

What is your trial and what does God say about it?

I had the opportunity, not long ago, to share with a young man about a very difficult time that my wife and I went through in 1999. This young man happened to be the delivery guy with the concrete for my youngest daughter's basement floor. As we stood beside his truck and watched the cement run down the chute, I began to share with him about my two daughters, who were in a near fatal accident 8 years ago.

I shared with him about the call we received that night at 11:30pm and how we were informed that the paramedics were cutting the car roof off, with the "jaws of life", to get them out. I told him about the ride to the accident scene; our fears, the blood, the broken glass, and the uncertainty of our 2 daughter's outcomes. He heard about my concerns at the local hospital, after conferring with the doctors, whether or not my youngest would live. They told me she would not. Collapsed lung, hematoma on one kidney, exploded spleen, stomach and intestines damaged, internal bleeding, and a broken back, as well as paralysis. I shared with him about our 2 _ month stay at Children's Hospital, and how the surgeon gave us the most horrific news: though our youngest daughter did survive the accident, she would never walk again. Mom and dad's lives were going to change drastically.
Everyone who follows Christ is going to face afflictions. "Many are the afflictions of the righteous" (Psalm 34:19). Paul spoke in 2 Corinthians 2:4 about "much affliction and anguish of the heartwith many tears." The Bible is full of believers who have endured great troubles and trials. I can honestly say that God has enabled my wife and I to come through a number of trials in recent years. But 1999 was one of the most difficult.

The Stranger

A few years after I was born, my Dad met a stranger who was new to oursmall Texas town. From the beginning, Dad was fascinated with thisenchanting newcomer and soon invited him to live with our family. Thestranger was quickly accepted and was around from then on.

As I grew up, I never questioned his place in my family. In my youngmind, he had a special niche. My parents were complementaryinstructors: Mom taught me good from evil, and Dad taught me to obey. But the stranger...he was our storyteller. He would keep us spellboundfor hours on end with adventures, mysteries and comedies.

If I wanted to know anything about politics, history or science, healways knew the answers about the past, understood the present andeven seemed able to predict the future! He took my family to the firstmajor league ball game. He made me laugh, and he made me cry. Thestranger never stopped talking, but Dad didn't seem to mind.

RIGHT ROAD WRONG VISION

The above statement is definitive of many people. Whateverroad we travelif our focus is skewed the way is arduous, painful and may be costly. Theroad of life, the road to success and the road to greater fulfillment areoften paved with self will, self satisfaction, self exaltation or analmost endless list of self motivations. It isn't wrong to consider one'sown needs or even our desires or aspirations which may indeed be Godgiven. The problem arises when our pursuits cause us to neglect thebenefit of what we may fail to see along the way as tunnel vision leads togreat depravation.

Right road/ wrong vision, seems to be how one might describe the modernday church. For the most part the church is attempting to press forwardwith the wrong vision. Jesus said He came to "seek and save that which waslost" (Luke 19:10). A similar mandate was set forth for the church inMatthew 28:19-20. The message of the church is to be one of redemption. Asthe body of Christ we are called to go and teach but have changed thatmessage to one resembling more of an enticement. Mankind is enslaved underthe power of the flesh and a tyrannical dictator. Deliverance isparamount. Jesus came to set the captives free. John 14:6 tells us thatJesus is the way the truth and the life. His way leads to life and lifemore abundantly. Unfortunately, the message of the church is one focusingon the abundance negating the need for deliverance. Prosperity, health anda multitude of divine benefits can indeed be the by-products of a lifesurrendered but, these must not be the motivation to seek or to be drawn. So much of the message of the church appeals to the life of the fleshrather than the death thereof.

Trust and Faith

"I am not skilled to understand, what God has willed, what God has planned. I only know at His right hand, stands One who is my savior." Every time I hear the words to this song, it pierces my heart. There is so much truth to that short song lyric. When you get to a point that you learn you are not skilled to understand, this is the point that you learn to trust your Lord.

"As for God, His way is perfect; The word of the Lord is proven; He is a shield to all who trust Him." 2 Samuel 22:31. Sometimes this can be so hard for me to wrap my brain around: "His way is perfect." Because, as a human, I feel that the dreams I have for myself is what would make my life perfect. But you must look at the next words of that verse. "The word of the Lord is proven." It is proven that if we have faith and trust in our Lord then we will live the life we were created to live. We will live with that deep peace.

How Long?

How long should I keep trying to talk to someone about the Lord when she never shows any hint of change? God's holy word says in Titus 3:10 "Reject a divisive man after the first and second admonition. Knowing that such a person is warped and sinning, being self condemned." But isn't that giving up on a person? Absolutely not! It's just the beginning; the start of white hot, fervent prayer just for that particular person!
You have got to see that your prayer can move mountains; your words cannot change a thing. Proverbs 14:7 states "Go from the presence of a foolish man, when you do not perceive in him the lips of knowledge." It is time for the body of Christ to use some discernment. If the Holy Spirit of God lives within us, why can the world spot a liar, a deceiver, a phony, while the church keeps trying to argue them into the fold?

St. Patrick's Day

St. Patrick's day is upon us once again as spring draws closer, and winter fights to hang on. Have you ever wondered about the man we know as St. Patrick? Thoughts like, "Why is there a day set apart from other days to honor this man? Is it a day for the Irish, or is it just a day to drink green beer or to turn rivers that run through our big cities green? Is it just a day for parades, and wearing green? Does it have anything to do with luck or green clovers or the blarney stone? All the above I believe explains what St. Patrick's day has become in America.

I wonder how many of us have ever read "The Confession of St. Patrick"? Here are a few excerpts from his confession. "I am Patrick, a sinner, most unlearned, the least of all the faithful, and utterly despised by many."

"I was then about sixteen years of age. I did not know the true God. I was taken into captivity to Ireland with many thousands of people, and deservedly so, because we turned away from God, and did not keep His commandments." Listen to more of St. Patrick's confession. "And there the Lord opened the sense of my unbelief that I might at last remember my sins and be converted with all my heart to the Lord my God."

I don't think St. Patrick's day has anything to do with what we have permitted it to become. Do you?

The Closet

As I serve the Lord, I am continually amazed at the tender care that my heavenly Father has for me. As He transforms me into the image of His son, Jesus Christ, the Lord never runs out of ways to capture my heart.
I discovered one of these nuggets when my mother-in-law lived with us for three months. She has Alzheimer disease and the dementia aspect of it is very advanced. She loves the Lord and has served Him for many years. We have always had a wonderful relationship, but my love for her was not enough to compensate for the changes that took place in our home. I went from having my home to myself quite often, to never being alone. I am accustomed to spending time totally alone with the Lord. Suddenly that was gone.At the peak of my frustration, I remembered hearing preaching about a prayer closet, an actual closet with clothes and shoes in it. Although I had prayed in a closet a few times in my life, I felt no need for it because I had a whole house to be my closet. But now that I found myself in a much different situation, a closet was exactly what I needed. I put on my headphones with worship music and headed to a basement closet. It was in that very closet that the Lord met me. We had the sweetest times together.

The Spirit of God would encourage, comfort, and strengthen me. It was not about putting in my time. It was about spending time with the Great God Jehovah. It was about sitting at the feet of Jesus, listening to Him, and learning of Him. As I sat at His feet, He would push me beyond my situation and stir me to pray for others,

Marriage and the Tabernacle

The Pastor asked me some time ago to prepare an article for the web page and with the deadline a couple weeks away I said 'sure'. As I was leaving his office I got a picture or a vision of the old Tabernacle and couldn't figure out why that should come to mind. Then I returned to work.

I have a busy schedule which entails the occasional 'out of the daily routine' training program. We had such a training program on a recent Friday which ran us right up to the time when my wife and I were to host a '10 Great Dates' at our church.

The 10 Great dates, designed for married couples, brings them together on a given night (while providing for child-care if needed), introduces them to a short video and then sends them out for a date with their spouse. Topics are provided with the object of reconnecting with ones mate and rekindling communication and intimacy. By Friday I was in no mood to host anything but a quiet evening in front of the television. Then as I was driving home I remembered the Tabernacle.

Have You Seen Her?

"The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound..." Isaiah 61:1
In June of 2004 God let me know I was called to reach out to the youth. This poem was written with a few different teens in mind. Although it does not apply to all of them, it is the voice of real kids in our community and the surrounding areas. God has shown me many things and opened my eyes to realities I thought were far away. I want to quickly share a little of what goes on in our backyards and across the street, and I pray your hearts are moved to do something.

The millennial generation is confused, believing something one week and something else the next. They have had so much different junk put in their heads that they do not know what truth is. This leads them to search, many times not even knowing what they are searching for. They do not think about the consequences and effects of their actions. Many of them live for the moment and the thrill. I have heard and seen proof of these things first-hand.

I have seen scars on many of their arms and even fresh cut wounds. They talk about drug addictions, and suicide. They express thoughts of murder and rage. A few have opened up about being molested for years by family members beginning at the preschool age. For one it led to thinking incest was normal. They are deserted by parents and wronged by caretakers. They have no self-esteem, no hope for a way out, and they cannot comprehend love. The list just goes on and on. Their knowledge of Jesus Christ and His sacrifice is scarce. A loving God seems very distant to them.We know the truth! Many of these youth long to be free from all the chains, but they do not know how. If we just reach out, following the Spirit to lead, many will grab on. Please pray that God will let you see the war that is raging outside our houses, and that He'll drop a desire in your heart to speak up. Youth awareness month may be over for now, but souls are being condemned every day. We must step up to the challenge and trust that God will supply us with the ability to further His kingdom. Philippians 4:19

Why does God take us to that place we don't want to go?

Why does God take us to that place that we do not want to go? Why does He ask us to step out of our boat? Why do we need to be sharpened and refined? Why does God want us alone, all to himself? For every person He has a different process. For me He called me to Texas.
To many people going to Texas to chase a dream sounds exciting. And I thought it would be. I came down here because God opened a door. I had worked hard in college, made it through with an even stronger relationship with God. And His reward was allowing me to go down south and play with lions and tigers. No joke, everyday my work is to feed, pet, and keep company 63 exotic felines. This was the chance I had waited for. But this was not a reward, this was Gods plan for my life. He knew I would learn more about my own

Proclamation of Praise

George Washington issued an historic proclamation during his first year as President. He set aside Thursday, November 26 as "A Day of Publick Thanksgiving and Prayer." Signed by Washington on October 3, 1789 and entitled "General Thanksgiving," the decree appointed the day "to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God."

On October 3, 1789 Washington signed a proclamation of General Thanksgiving. On October 21, 2001 I was issued a proclamation of Despair. General Washington signed a decree to remind us to be grateful. I signed a decree giving a doctor the right to remove an ungrateful foreign disease called cancer.

On that day, my life forever changed. Every fiber of my being rang with songs of discord and disbelief. My intellect immediately fed off of my emotions and it resonated with fleshly thoughts of death. My spirit mind knew the faithfulness of God, but my human mind ran with the feet of him [Satan] that casts fear into the hearts of man. I became overwhelmed with the thought of dying and I could not seem to climb out of the chambers of my imaginations called suffering. I was keenly aware of Satan's devices, yet there I was, bound in the chains of deception. Two months into my desperate battle with my mind, we sang a song at church called "There's no God like Jehovah." As we sang the song, the Lord's words of life began to fill my inner being with an immense sense of peace. Scriptures began to flood my soul. "Let not your heart be troubled..." "Come unto me all who labor and are heavy laden..." "For I know the thoughts I think towards you, thoughts of peace..." The words of the song began to have meaning. There truly was no God like Jehovah. I was aware of no one around me at all. I was totally alone with the One and only one who was able to keep me from eternal death. It was at that moment that the words "Live or die, I'm yours God!!!" spilled from my lips. I was loosed from the bonds of terror and I felt the rapturous glory of praise. It did not matter that death might encompass my soul. I was free from all fear. I would live my life praising the one who created me. In the good times and in the bad times, I would lift up the name of Jesus. He was the author and finisher of my faith.

History of Halloween

I became a Christian on July 21, 1996. Almost completely unchurched up untilthat point in my life, I was filled with questions. I probably drove people crazy as I questioned one thing after another, seeking understanding. It wasn't long before summer ended. Fall came and, with it, Halloween. Halloween was something that I'd never given much thought to before, but now it seemed, in my mind, to be this huge issue that I had to choose where I stood on. Time has passed, and I, again, find myself at a point in my life where I don't give it much thought anymore. For some, Halloween is a very controversial topic. Others, like myself, have fallen into the snare of apathy. Apathy is one of the enemy's greatest weapons. My intent in this article is not to condemn or endorse you if you choose to celebrate the holiday. I do hope to provide some useful facts in understanding the history and origins of this holiday. I also plan to give some useful tips to anyone who wants to celebrate the holiday with a focus on reaching out to the lost. Hopefully, armed with a little knowledge and insight, we can make more informed and spirit-led decisions regarding this controversial holiday.
The holiday finds its beginnings in Ireland about 3,000 years ago among the Celts. The Celtic new year began on November 1st. Being a primarily agricultural society, winter was a fearful time

What the World calls "Tolerance". . .Christians should call "Hatred"

As Americans, we live in a society on the leading edge of world knowledge, power, and innovation. We, by the grace of God, live in a society in which we are given freedom as a fundamental right. We also live in a society completely entrenched in moral relativism. For those of you likely not familiar with this term, more specifically those who have not been force-fed the rubbish in a Philosophy 101 class, dictionary.com defines relativism as: a theory, especially in ethics or aesthetics, that conceptions of truth and moral values are not absolute but are relative to the persons or groups holding them. To put this definition in simpler words, moral relativism is the belief that whatever an individual believes as truth is in fact true, simply because they believe it to be so, and should be respected and tolerated by everyone else. Hmmm. . . there's that "T" word that seems to be so prominent these days. . . let's take a deeper look at Tolerance.
1 Corinthians 8:1 states clearly that, "Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up". I will attempt to show you that Intolerance, the same Intolerance that is being stamped on the foreheads of most Evangelical Christians these days by society, is not in fact a lack of knowledge and open-mindedness as the world would say, but instead is a deep act of love. In his letter to the church, Jude, brother of Jesus, writes in chapter 1 verse 23, "snatch others from the fire and save them; to others show mercy, mixed with fear-hating even the clothing stained by corrupted flesh." It is our God-given. . .

Sucker Punched

*click to animate

A dozen or so years ago my brother stopped at a convenient store. He worked the midnight shift for a steel mill in town. The hours were long and the work hard, which in turn made my brothers' body hard and strong as well. To most people I am considered big-at six foot two and two hundred and thirty pounds. My brother is my height, but the similarities stop there. He goes two hundred and seventy five pounds, has a five hundred pound bench press, arms the size of most men's legs, and a barreled chest.

He would stop at the convenient store and buy a large soda for his long ride home every morning after his shift was over. On this morning, as the sun was just starting to rise, my big brother was walking to his car, which he had parked out back. As he turned the corner of the building something struck him in the face, someone had suckered punched him! Now, to my brother it barely registered on his pain scale, but still someone had the gall to sucker punch him.

As he turned to see his assailant he saw a man about his age, with his hands up, eyes bugging out, and stuttering in fear. When you hit someone with everything you've got and they do not go down, let alone barely flinch, it has the tendency to put fear in you.

America, Remember when God use to shed His grace on thee

Just like some two thousand years ago, the people are once again looking for some political figure to rise up out of the sea of humanity to lead this once great nation. The people of Israel were looking for some political leader or some great general to deliver them from the grip of the Roman Empire. They were so caught up in that fact that they missed the coming of the Messiah. History is certainly repeating her self again.

There are many precious metals in the world. Very valuable, and very rare. I dont know the exact amount, but gold seems to always be bouncing around 300 to 400 dollars an ounce. An ounce!! How about diamonds and rubies, not to mention plutonium. Extremely valuable items, but I would like to talk to you about something thats more valuable then the above, and its something that we all have. Isnt that exciting?? Ecc 3:1-4 To every [thing there is] a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: VS.2 A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up [that which is] planted; VS.3 A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; VS.4 A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance. Have you figured it out??
The Call of Motherhood

It wasnt until after our son was born, that I realized what a high calling motherhood actually is. I think that being a mother is one of the greatest roles and responsibilities a woman has in her lifetime.

From the moment your child is born, they depend on you to take care of their every need. There are many sacrifices you make when taking care of a child, but everything you do needs to be done with a servants heart. Psalm 127:3 Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb is a reward.

I feel that raising your children in a Godly home is one of the most important things you could do for your child. Joshua 24:15 But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. Having a Godly relationship with your spouse gives your child an example to learn by, and also help them feel safe and secure, with a sense of love and comfort in their home. Families and family values are taken so lightly these days and are so often overlooked, and the children are the ones who suffer from it.

Ode to Contentness

Most of us have heard or read that it is more blessed to give than to receive (Acts 20:35). So with this Christmas season now over, can anyone agree with the truth in that? I know I can the hard way, and my husband would say the same.

Since I have been married (a little over four years), we've certainly learned quite a bit. We've never been big spenders, but there was a time we were able to go out and also buy some gifts at Christmas time. Our family of two soon became three, and my heart longed to stay home with our son. With a cut in income and an added expense, things rapidly became tighter. Some things were easy to sacrifice as our priorities changed. On the other hand, when emergency situations rolled around, or Christmas came, we used our credit card. That shortly tallied up, and of and of course it got harder to pay above the minimum payment. The harder it got, and the closer we drew to God, we began to see it all in a

That's My Church

God spoke to me the other day. No, really, He did. How can I tell, you ask? Well, I dont know exactly..He just did. I guess the best way to describe it is this. I know my own thoughts pretty well after fifty-some years and this thought just wasnt mine. And since I had just asked Him a question..in frustration..and it was a profound answer, I can truthfully say that God spoke to me.
Ive recently had a teaching assignment over a class of Learning Disabled / Developmentally Handicapped fifth grade students in a nearby public school. It was a real challenge since my comfort zone normally goes no lower than the eleventh grade. But the job was an eye opener for me and a great but sometimes unwanted learning experience.
